Protests Erupt in Nepal

Protests erupted in Nepal, sparked by a government ban of major social media platforms and fueled by longtime discontent with the economy, unemployment, corruption and nepotism in the political system.

Protesters torched the parliament building, presidential house, and homes of several politicians including some ministers. At least 19 people died in the violence.

Led mostly by young people, the unrest was dubbed the GenZ protests. Generation Z are people born from 1995 to 2010.

Nepal had a violent uprising in 2006 which forced out its monarchy. A new constitution took effect in 2015. Since then, each prime minister has only held office one or two years.
