Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli lifted the ban on 26 major social media platforms that sparked violent protests and announced his resignation in the face of mass outrage over corruption.

Oli will remain in office until his replacement is chosen. Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel invited protest leaders for talks.

Nineteen people died in the violence. Amnesty International reported live ammunition was fired at protesters during the height of the protests. The parliament building and homes of various politicians were attacked, often burned.

The government announced it will investigate the violence, pay compensation to families of those who died, and provide medical treatment to the injured free of charge. The United Nations insisted investigation must be transparent and must be undertaken promptly.

The army stepped in to restore order on the streets.
