NWS Will Reinstate Translation of Its Services

National Weather Service announced on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that by 28 April 2025 it will resume translation of its products such as weather warnings to languages other than English.

Automatic translations ended when the contract with artificial intelligence company Lilt expired and Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency,” a subset of a White House IT team, chose not to renew or replace it. Translations were made to Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, French and Samoan.

Such translations were not yet provided several years ago when a storm hit Bossier Parish, Louisiana. The storm felled a tree which split a mobile home in half, killing a two year old child. The family spoke mostly Spanish and could not understand storm warnings that were sent out only in English.
