| 0

After fierce outcry, the National Institutes of Health announced a U-turn and declared the Women’s Health Initiative will continue after this fiscal year.

In its more than three decades and more than 2400 scientific articles published so far, examples of WHI findings include:

  • risks of using certain kinds of hormone therapy for menopause, estimated to have prevented 126,000 breast cancer cases
  • vitamin D does not help prevent bone loss

Examples of WHI studies underway include:

  • effects of sleep hypoxia on resilience
  • the relationship between physical activity (objectively measured) and cardiovascular health
  • health benefits of a physical activity program for older women
  • a “long life” study regarding health and aging in women
