New York Lawmakers Denied Access to Inspect ICE Detention Facility

| 0

Congressional Representatives Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) and Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) were denied access to inspect Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention practices on the 10th floor at 26 Federal Plaza.

Advocacy groups believe hundreds of people are being detained at the site in inhumane conditions. The two representatives waited more than an hour in the lobby but were turned away by a deputy. Espaillat said, “She said that it’s an ICE facility and a sensitive facility.” As part of their oversight duties and powers, members of Congress have the right by law to inspect any ICE facility at any time without notice.

ICE has been nabbing people at their immigration hearings and routine check-in appointments. Reports of poor conditions in detention facilities are widespread.
