Near Miss Between Delta Flight and Air Force Jets at DC Airport
Delta Flight 2983 and four Air Force jets had a near miss as the Delta flight took off from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The Air Force T-38 jets were on their way to a scheduled flyover at Arlington National Cemetary. The Delta flight had been given clearance to take off as usual. All the aircraft involved were given diversion instructions by air traffic control to avert a collision.
The incident occurred in the same vicinity as the crash between a commercial flight and a military helicopter earlier this year. Since then, the FAA workforce has been reduced, exacerbating short-staffing and pressure on air traffic control.
