Columbia University’s Interim President Resigns Under Pressure from DJT

Katrina Armstrong, interim President of Columbia University, resigned to return to leading the university’s medical center.

Last week the university gave in to Donald Trump’s demands in order to regain access to $400 million in federal funding the government threatened to cut off. The government also targeted student activists who are not citizens for its anti-immigrant roundups. Among the government’s demands were a new campus police force, instituting a partial ban of face masks, and ending faculty control of the department of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies.

Claire Shipman, who is co-chair of the Board of Trustees and has background as a journalist, is now acting President of the university.

Armstrong is the second person to resign from the role of President within the past year. Minouche Shafik, who had been an economist and World Bank official, resigned last year after letting police mount multiple large-scale operations on campus against protesters.
