Military Begins Detaining People in National Defense Area Along Border

| 0

Three alleged illegal aliens became the first people detained by the military in the newly declared National Defense Area along 260 miles of the border between Mexico and the states of New Mexico and Texas.

Donald Trump declared the buffer zone along the border as extensions of military bases as a way to allow military troops to detain civilians without needing to invoke the Insurrection Act. Within the zone, troops can stop, search and detain anyone as a trespasser, regardless of whether they are immigrants or USA citizens. They can also execute crowd control.

Troops are expected to hand over to civilian law enforcement any people they detain in the buffer zone.

So far judges in New Mexico and Texas dismissed some trespassing charges and acquitted a woman from Peru on the grounds that they did not realize they were going into a restricted area.
