Lawsuit Seeks to Halt Illegal Dismantling of USAID

Labor unions sued Donald Trump’s Administration to halt his efforts to freeze foreign aid and dismantle the agency. The lawsuit asserts only Congress has the authority to take such actions.

From a list of 600 people identified by senior staff as essential and whose work must not be interrupted, Secretary of State Marco Rubio only approved less than half for exemption from administrative leave that has been ordered to start Friday for most of the agency’s 13,000+ workers. Overseas workers have a 30 day window to return to the USA. Some workers who are foreign nationals face military conscription, even into active war, due to being dropped by USAID.

At least 1400 workers have already lost access to their email accounts. Foreign aid is still apparently mostly or entirely halted, even though days ago it appeared that the freeze had been at least partially lifted.

USA farmers are in uproar over instantly losing the $2 billion they normally earn by selling from their harvests to USAID for foreign food aid.

Rubio said, “We’re not trying to be disruptive to people’s personal lives. We’re not being punitive here. But this is the only way we’ve been able to get cooperation from USAID.”
