Labor Union Sues Against Reclassification of Civil Servants

The National Treasury Employees Union sued the federal government to block Donald Trump’s executive order that would ease purging of professional civil servants for replacement with partisan loyalists.

In support of the lawsuit, the American Postal Workers Union issued a statement that the executive order “would allow the ruling administration to reclassify many civil servants as policymaking or policy-evaluating workers, thereby removing their civil service protections and making them at-will employees. President Trump could then install whomever he pleases based on favoritism and loyalty to his administration.” APWU further said replacing “dedicated civil servants with inexperienced cronies removes the very people who are experts at their jobs and have the knowledge to help our government serve our communities in the best possible way.”

NTEU represents about 150,000 federal employees across 37 federal entities. At the union’s request, in May 2024 the Office of Personnel Management put in place additional safeguards for workers against a potential action like Monday’s executive order.
