Judge Lifts Order that Paused Dismantling of USAID

Federal District Court Judge Carl Nichols lifted his order that had blocked dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

This allows Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, which is a subset of a White House IT team rather than a government department, to put thousands of USAID employees on administrative leave as an interim step to firing them. DOGE can also recall USAID workers from field offices abroad.

Nichols said, “[…] it simply is not possible for the Court to conclude, as a matter of law or equity, that the public interest favors or disfavors an injunction.”

He decided labor unions that sued to block dismantling of USAID on behalf of federal workers did not prove irreparable harm, did not show their case is likely to prevail on the merits, and did not show an injunction is in the public interest.
