Judge Blocks Mass Firings at CFPB Again

Federal District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who previously issued an order blocking Donald Trump’s regime from demolishing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, issued another order to block mass firings of its personnel.

Jackson said she is “deeply concerned” about non-compliance with her earlier order to keep CFPB operating while she considers the merits of the lawsuit that seeks to save it.

CFPB Acting Director Russell Vought had told agency staff that 1483 of them were slated to be terminated, leaving only 207 in the agency. CFPB’s mission was also to change away from investigations of digital payment platforms, medical debt, and several other areas. The firings were especially focused against privacy, security, and cybersecurity. Practically everyone working in those CFPB units was being fired.

Jackson’s previous order prohibited firings at CFPB except as a result of a “particularized assessment” of employees’ roles, National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), which represents CFPB employees, argues this is unlikely to have happened. Jackson has “concerns about whether agency is in compliance” with her earlier order.

In addition to the original question put before her, Jackson is now considering whether the government violated her court order by ordering mass firings. She set an evidentiary hearing for 28 April 28 2025.
