Judge Blocks DJT Cutoff of $600 million for Teacher Training

| 0

Federal District Court Judge Myong Joun issued a temporary restraining order blocking Donald Trump’s cutoff of $600 million in funding for teacher training.

This ruling came in a case filed by eight state Attorneys General, all of them from Democratic states: California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland,  Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Wisconsin.

The specific programs cut without notice in February by the Department of Education are:

  • Teacher Quality Partnership
  • Supporting Effective Educator Development

These programs fund grants for programs to train teachers, especially for such areas as math, science and special education. The programs increase teacher retention.

Joun ruled the funding cuts violated law due to not giving a clear explanation of the reason for them. On the issue of whether the plaintiffs have standing to sute, Joun found the states are already needing to cancel teacher training and lay off workers, and are at risk of lasting harm.

The Department of Justice filed an appeal before the end of the day with the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals.
