ICE Detains Prominent Colorado Immigrant Advocate

Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Jeanette Vizguerra, a prominent advocate for immigrants in Colorado who is an undocumented immigrant herself.

Vizguerra entered the USA from Mexico without authorization more than 20 years ago. She has worked as a janitor and owned a moving company for a while. In 2017, she avoided deportation by seeking sanctuary in a Denver church and garnered national attention. She was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of that year.

She has not been able to attain citizenship, despite trying.

Governor Jared Polis (D-CO) said she “has spent decades in our country, helping the community, has a job, has no history of violence, is not a threat to the community, and above all else, deserves due process pursuant to the law.”

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said this is “not about safety” but rather, “this is Putin-style persecution of political dissidents.”

John Hickenlooper, one of Colorado’s Senators, said, “Targeting a mother who has been an active part of our Colorado community for nearly three decades will not fix our broken immigration system or secure our border.”
