ICE Conducts Raids at Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket

| 0

Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation detained about 40 people in immigration raids conducted by pulling over vehicles across Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, starting around 07:00.

Both areas are popular and expensive tourist destinations, and this is the beginning of high season.

ICE does not have authority to make traffic stops. By partnering with law enforcement agencies that can make traffic stops, ICE is able to nab people at will and its targets are unable to protect themselves by staying in their homes until ICE obtains a judicial warrant. This technique proved highly effective in Nashville, Tennessee, where Tennessee Highway Patrol conducted traffic stops and ICE agents in another vehicle with them detained people.

It was not clear whether the operation was a random sweep. ICE claimed to be targeting illegal aliens and at least one “child predator,” but has a pattern of claiming arrestees are criminals when they have no criminal history. Federal agents are reportedly under pressure to increase arrests of immigrants to 3000 per day.
