Government Provides Only One of Three Parts Required in Abrego Garcia Update to Court

| 0

In the daily update required by federal District Court Judge Paula Xinis about the status of efforts to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the USA, the government responded to only one of the three questions the judge requires answered.

The filing was submitted after its 17:00 deadline. In the filing, Michael G. Kozak, a senior State Department official, wrote:

“It is my understanding based on official reporting from our Embassy in San Salvador that Abrego Garcia is currently being held in the Terrorism Confinement Center in El Salvador. He is alive and secure in that facility. He is detained pursuant to the sovereign, domestic authority of El Salvador.”

Kozak did not address the other two questions the judge ordered the government to answer in each daily update. Xinis ordered an update by 17:00 each day disclosing not only Abrego Garcia’s “current physical location and custodial status” but also “what steps, if any, Defendants have taken (and) will take, and when, to facilitate” retrieving him to the USA.
