DJT Ends Temporary Protected Status for Immigrants from Afghanistan and Cameroon

Donald Trump terminated temporary protected status for about 14,600 Afghan and 7900 Cameroonians in the USA.

TPS is typically offered by the USA to people for whom returning to their native country may be unsafe for at least the short term due to such issues as conflict or natural disaster. In some instances such as people fleeing the war in Ukraine, people holding TPS must have American sponsors.

Trump has been terminating TPS for people from country after country, especially those for whom TPS was granted during President Joe Biden’s term: Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, Venezuela.

Afghans and Cameroonians face returning to dire situations. Afghanistan is now ruled by the Taliban, and many of the Afghans in the USA have TPS because their assistance to the USA’s military there has made them targets of the Taliban. Cameroon’s government has been fighting with separatists since 2017. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said these conditions in Afghanistan and Cameroon no longer require TPS.

Courts have been stepping in to block Trump’s orders for TPS termination, as they did during his first time. This latest set of terminations is expected to go to court too.
