Despite treatment in a Lubbock hospital, a school child is the first person in the USA to die of measles since 2015.

The measles outbreak that has so far sickened 124 in 9 counties, starting in west Texas and spreading to new Mexico, has been spreading rapidly among unvaccinated people. Portions of the outbreak area are a three to four hour drive from the nearest hospital.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., head of the Department of Health and Human Services, said HHS is “watching” the outbreak and described it as not unusual.
