Firefighters Lured into Deadly Ambush

Wess Roley set a brush fire at Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to lure firefighters and ambushed them with a high-powered rifle, killing Frank Harwood and John Morrison and wounding Dave Tysdal.

SWAT officers found Roley’s body with a firearm later. He had apparently shot himself.

Roley was 20, described as a highly strung loner. His family said he once wanted to be a firefighter. Authorities said he seemed to be living in his car and was asked to move it by firefighters earlier.

Roley’s family issued a statement of public condolences. “There are no words that can suffice for this tragedy and the infinite losses suffered by those affected by this shooting. We do not understand why this happened or how this came about.”
