Fighter Jet Falls Off Deck of Aircraft Carrier Harry S. Truman

An F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet worth $67 million slipped off the hangar deck of the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman into the Red Sea as sailors were towing it into position.

The two crew members in the jet and on the towing tractor jumped out before both items went overboard. The crew member who jumped from the aircraft was injured slightly.

The accident may have happened due to a sharp turn by the carrier as evasive action against an attack by Houthis.

It was not clear whether an effort would be made to recover the jet.

The carrier has been involved in escalating operations against Houthi rebels based in Yemen. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has extended the carrier’s tour of duty in the Middle East by a month so far.
