FEMA Head Says He was Unaware USA Has Hurricane Season

| 0

David Richardson, the newly appointed head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said in an all-hands meeting that he had been unaware the USA has a hurricane season.

Hurricane season is June through November. It began the day before his remark.

Richardson did not indicate whether or not he was joking. He has no disaster management experience. He is a former Marine artillery officer and currently holds a second job as the Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for countering weapons of mass destruction.

He already cancelled a new disaster response plan even though the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts this hurricane season will be more active than usual.

FEMA has lost about a third of its full time employees since 20 January when Donald Trump began this term in office. FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton publicly disagreed with the dramatically scaled-back direction Trump wanted to take FEMA and was kicked out. Having already been overstretched by last year’s disasters such as Hurricane Helene, with drastic cutbacks FEMA is widely understood to be unready for a repeat performance. Not that Trump wants it to be ready, having denied North Carolina’s recent request for further help from FEMA.

Richardson’s remark left the entire workforce confused and alarmed.
