Family of Boulder, Colorado Attacker Detained for Expedited Deportation

The wife and five children of Mohamed Sabry Soliman, who attacked a peaceful demonstration in Boulder, Colorado on Sunday, were taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for expedited deportation.

The State Department revoked the visas for the entire family after Soliman’s attack.

The wife and children were initially taken to ICE’s detention facility at Florence, Colorado, but were due to be moved to a detention center in Texas which is often the last stop before deportation. Which country they might be sent to was not clear.

How quickly they might be deported is also unclear. Normally a person who enters on a visa cannot be put through expedited removal, a fast track deportation no hearing at an immigration court.

Soliman says he kept his plans secret from everyone, including his family. He timed his attack so it occurred three days after his oldest daughter Habiba graduated from high school. She won a “Best and Brightest” scholarship awarded by the Colorado Springs Gazette which is presumably now useless. Her ambition is to become a medical doctor. After immigrating, she achieved fluency in English quickly. She volunteered at a local hospital.
