Federal Judges Consider Having Their Own Security Force

| 0

Federal judges, who are subject to escalating threats especially when their rulings go against Donald Trump’s wishes, are considering developing their own security force over concern that Trump controls the U.S. Marshal service that is supposed to protect them.

The subject came up in March at the semi-annual Judicial Conference, a national policymaking mechanism for federal courts. The close-door topic took more than two months to surface in news media. Trump has established a pattern of withdrawing security protection from people he dislikes or holds a grudge against.

Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced a bill to transfer control of the U.S. Marshals to the judicial branch. Its director would be appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Judicial Conference. The bill is more a show of support to federal judges than a likely solution. Democrats are in the minority in both houses of Congress. Trump, who is grasping for more power and would not want to give up any, could veto the bill.

U.S. Marshals say the number of federal judges subjected to threats more than doubled from 2019 to 2024. Now that Trump is in office again, he, his subordinates and his acolytes are escalating not only rhetoric but actions against judges they don’t like at all levels.
