European Emergency Summit Meets about Ukraine and DJT

Leaders of a handful of leading European countries met in Paris for an emergency summit about how to respond to Donald Trump’s radical shift away from supporting Ukraine.

No joint announcement came out of the meeting.

The summit included Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and UK, as well as the NATO secretary-general and the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission.

Summit attendees were deeply alarmed by Trump’s turnabout against supporting Ukraine’s defenses and toward Russia’s invasion, but recognized they rely on the USA’s military strength and do not have enough to fill in for it on behalf of Ukraine.

They did not agree on a path forward. France’s Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone with the USA’s Trump and Ukraine’s Zelensky. After the summit, the UK’s Kier Starmer offered to put British troops along the Ukrainian border once a peace deal is agreed.
