EU Adds €500 million to Research Council in 2025-2027 to Attract Scientists and Researchers from USA

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a €500 million “super grant” program designed to attract scientists and researchers from the USA where research is being dramatically cut.

The program will be added to the European Research Council, which already has a 2021-2027 budget of €16 billion, “to make Europe a magnet for researchers.” Von der Leyen also said the EU will “to enshrine freedom of scientific research into law.”

At the direction of Donald Trump, the USA has slashed National Science Foundation funding. At least 380 programs have been cut so far as a result. Primary targets are any research pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion, or about misinformation.

Von der Leyen said, “We can all agree that science has no passport, no gender, no ethnicity, no political party. We believe that diversity is an asset of humanity and the lifeblood of science. It is one of the most valuable global assets and it must be protected.”

Sharing the same stage at the “Choose Europe for Science” event in Paris where von der Leyen made her announcement, French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe “must become a refuge” for scientists and researchers. “The message is simple. If you like freedom, come and help us to remain free, to do research here, to help us become better, to invest in our future.”
