Erez Reuveni, the Department of Justice attorney who admitted in court that Kilmar Abrego Garcia was deported to CECOT prison in El Salvador by mistake, was put on administrative leave.

Reuveni had been promoted 21 March 2025 to acting deputy director of the Justice Department Office of Immigration Litigation.

When asked questions by federal District Court Judge Paula Xinis in a hearing about Abrego Garcia’s lawsuit seeking to be returned to the USA, Reuveni admitted to lack of evidence and lack of a warrant. He said, “The facts are conceded, plaintiff Abrego Garcia should not have been removed.”

Announcing that she was putting him on leave, Attorney General Pam Bondi said, “At my direction, every Department of Justice attorney is required to zealously advocate on behalf of the United States. Any attorney who fails to abide by this direction will face consequences.”

Bondi had attorneys file a request with Xinis to stay her order. Xinis said no.
