DOGE Releases Data About Federal Savings that Doesn’t Add Up

| 0

Elon Musk’s DOGE released a feature on its website to show how much federal spending the team has cut. NPR’s dive into the data found considerable errors.

The Department of Government Efficiency is a subset of a White House IT team, not a department, release. It is staffed with people drawn from Musk’s companies.

The Savings portion of the site has a “wall of receipts.” DOGE claimed it showed savings of more than $16 billion from terminated contracts. After correcting an apparent clerical error, it now shows $8.5 billion. The worst error National Public Radio found in that category counted an $8 million contract as $8 billion. DOGE persistently claimed to correct the error but kept it in various portions of the website.

Most other purported cost savings are not documented well enough to be verifiable.
