DJT Targets Susman Godfrey Law Firm

| 0

Donald Trump signed an executive order against major Houston-based law firm Susman Godfrey, restricting its access to federal buildings, threatening cancellation of federal contract and suspending its lawyers’ security clearances.

Trump claimed the firm undermines USA interests and elections, and discriminates by offering opportunities for non-white students.

Susman Godfrey has 170 attorneys. It represented Dominion Voting Systems, a maker of electronic voting machines, in a successful defamation case against Fox News, which repeatedly claimed on the air that the machines were rigged to cheat in the 2020 elections. In 2023 Fox agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle the case.

So far Trump has attacked four other major law firms that have worked on behalf of people or causes that he regards as his adversaries. Of the other four, Perkins Coie, WilmerHale, and Jenner & Block are fighting him in court.

Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP capitulated, making deals with him to get the executive orders against them lifted. In short order after that, Skadden Arps, Milbank and Willkie Farr made deals too. Each agreed to donate the equivalent of $40 million to $100 million apiece in free legal work for causes Trump chooses, as well as other concessions.
