DJT Pauses Tariffs on Canadian Goods for 30 Days

As with Mexico, after speaking with the head of state, Donald Trump agreed to a 30 days pause before imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods.

In the call, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to take steps to reduce any flow of fentanyl across the border into the USA. As with Mexico, the steps agreed by Canada largely involve deployment of 10,000 people for border security and existing plans.

Trudeau said, “Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.” This plan was announced 18 December 2024, more than a month before Trump took office.
