| 0

Donald Trump signed an executive order that the Institute for Museum and Library Services “be eliminated to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law.”

The agency provides grants to “advance, support, and empower” museums, libraries and similar institutions across the USA. The grants it disburses total about $160 million to cover a variety of educational programs and research. It was one of several federal agencies gutted by the order. The full list is:

  • Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service
  • United States Agency for Global Media
  • Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in the Smithsonian Institution
  • Institute of Museum and Library Services
  • United States Interagency Council on Homelessness
  • Community Development Financial Institutions Fund
  • Minority Business Development Agency

IMLS entire staff of about 75 were put on 90 day administrative leave, effective immediately, soon after DOGE representatives met with the agency’s human resources department. Staff access to email was cut off and they were barred from the premises unless they got prior permission to enter.
