DJT Delivers Longest-Ever Presidential Address to Joint Session of Congress

Donald Trump delivered the longest-ever Presidential address to a joint session of Congress.

Although technically not a State of the Union speech, the 1 hour 40 minute speech was generally treated as one.

Among the many lies in his speech, Trump claimed Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” had uncovered a waste of $8 million to make transgender mice. In truth, some studies made transgenic mice which have a few human genes inserted into them and are highly useful for laboratory studies of human disease response.

Some Democrats boycotted the speech. Others left in the middle of it. Early in the speech, Congressional Representative Al Green (D-TX-9th) interrupted after Trump bragged about having a mandate (with less than half of the popular votes cast). Green shouted, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid.” Green continued to interrupt as Republicans booed and chanted until House Speaker Mike Johnson had Green ejected from the chamber.

Many Democrats fumed about the decorous behavior of most of the party’s members in the chamber and applauded Green’s intervention instead. Trump’s lies got lengthy breaks for applause while nearly all Democrats in the chamber stayed quiet. Only Green produced a viral moment.

Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) delivered a post-speech response on behalf of Democrats.

The following day, the House voted to censure Green. Ten Democrats joined Republicans in voting for the censure.
