DJT Cranks Up Tariffs Again

| 0

Donald Trump cranked up tariffs again, which he announced on his social media platform Truth Social showing images of the tariff letters he sent to heads of state.

Japan and South Korea were first, hit with 25% tariffs starting 1 August 2025.

A couple of hours later he announced tariffs of up to 40% against Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Myanmar and Laos. He promised more such announcements.

When he backed off his previous round of tariffs to 10%, he set a deadline of 00:01 on 9 July for countries to make a trade deal and avoid this round of tariffs. Only three countries have made such deals. Trump is signing a new executive order pushing that deadline to 1 August. It is not clear why.

Stock markets responded by slumping.
