DJT Announces Israel-Iran Ceasefire that They Know Nothing About

On 23 June 2025 at 18:02, Donald Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that Israel and Iran agreed to “a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE” that would lead to “an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR.” It was a surprise to Israel, Iran and Trump’s advisors.

Over the next several hours:

Trump made more social media posts lauding the agreement the parties did not know about, and himself for making it happen.
Trump set the start time for the ceasefire as 24 June at 07:30 local time. No other details of the purported agreement were forthcoming.
Israel launched an air strike against Iran, killing nine people at Gilan.
Iran responded to the air strike, killing five people at Beersheba.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X (formerly Twitter) around 21:00 USA Eastern time (04:30 the next day in Tehran): “As of now, there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations. However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards.”
Around 02:00 USA Eastern time (09:30 in Tehran), Israel released a statement that it would honor the ceasefire but would respond “forcefully” if Iran breached it.
Israel and Iran accused each other of breaching the ceasefire.
Around 07:00 USA Eastern time, Trump waded in again through bombastic statements to reporters, especially hammering on Israel to stop attacking.
After a last military show by each of the two countries, matters seemed to settle down, although it was unclear how well the ceasefire would hold.
Trump declared this ended a conflict that will be known as the Twelve Day War because that is what he decided to all it.

Polling by CNN showed 56% of Americans disapproved of the USA air strikes against Iran and only 44% approved.
