Democrats Hold Onto NY State Senate Seat in Special Election for Trump-Friendly District

| 0

Business owner and non-profit leader Sam Sutton won a special election for New York state Senate District 22, keeping the seat Democratic after Simcha Felder resigned from it to take a seat on New York City Council.

Sutton defeated Republican attorney Nachman Caller, whose previous last election campaign was for State Assembly a decade ago.

The state Senate district includes a portion of Brooklyn that voted heavily for Donald Trump in the November 2024 Presidential race. Felder repeatedly ran unopposed for the state Senate seat and caucused with Republicans rather than Democrats, keeping a highly conservative stance.

The district has an Orthodox Jewish area. Sutton is co-leader of the Sephardic Community Federation. He won by about two to one. He is known for building consensus and championing equity. He said his priorities will be “community-based approaches” to public safety, increasing school funding and advancing clean energy initiatives, a substantial shift from his predecessor’s priorities.
