Democrat Wins Iowa Senate Seat in Special Election

In a special election for Senate District 35, Democrat Mike Zimmer defeated Republican Kate Whittington by 52% to 48%.

The special election occurred after Chris Cournoyer vacated the seat to become the state’s Lieutenant Governor.

In November 2024, at the top of the ticket Republican Donald Trump won the district. Republicans still have an overwhelming majority of 34 to 16 in the state Senate.
