Democrat Replaces Assassinated MN State Representative Melissa Hortman

Democrat Xp Lee won the special election to replace assassinated Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman.

He defeated Republican real estate agent Ruth Bittner for the seat. The district is heavily Democratic.

Lee’s win restores the 67-67 tie between Democrats and Republicans in the state House, for which the two parties have a power-sharing arrangement that was brokered by Hortman and required her to step down from her post as Speaker of the House. The murder of Hortman and her husband in June 2025 threatened to hand control of the chamber to Republicans.

Lee was formerly a member of the Brooklyn Park City Council.
