James Malone, a Democrat who is mayor of East Petersburg, edged out Republican Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons in a special election to serve the remainder of the term in Pennsylvania’s 36th state Senate seat.

The election was called after former state Senator Ryan Aument, a Republican, resigned.

The district voted for Trump by +15 points in November 2024. Republicans there have a 23 point lead in voter registrations over Democrats.

After Malone’s win, the state Senate will be 27 Republican versus 23 Democratic.
