Congressional Representative Raúl M. Grijalva Dies

Congressional Representative Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) died at the age of 77 from complications in treatment for cancer.

During his terms in the House after first being elected in 2002, he especially pushed for environmental protection and strove to represent underdogs in society. In 2008 he led the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He was the ranking Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee until earlier this year. Recently he was absent from Congress while undergoing cancer treatment. He planned to retire in 2026.

His replacement will be chosen in a special election.
