Commander of USA Military Base in Greenland Fired After J.D. Vance Visit

Colonel Susannah Meyers has been fired from her post as commander of the USA’s Pituffik space base in Greenland after hosting Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife 28 March 2025.

Meyers was assigned as base commander in July 2024. She has been replaced by Colonel Shawn Lee.

While at the base, Vance told troops at the base that the USA must get control of Greenland, which is belongs to Denmark. He said this is necessary to block threats from China and Russia. He backs Donald Trump’s ambition to take the island by any means necessary, including by force, even though Denmark is an ally and a fellow member of NATO.

USA’s Space Force released a statement that Meyers was removed for a “loss of confidence” in her leadership capabilities. According to Military.com, Meyers emailed all personnel at the base 31 March “seemingly aimed at generating unity among the airmen and guardians, as well as the Canadians, Danes and Greenlanders who work there, following Vance’s appearance.”

I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the US administration discussed by vice-president Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik space base.

On the social media platform X, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell posted, “Actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defence.”
