Columbia University Capitulates to DJT

| 0

To regain access to $400 million in federal grants that Donald Trump withheld, Columbia University capitulated to most of his demands.

To satisfy Trump, the university agreed to:

  • ban face masks “for the purpose of concealing one’s identity”
  • hire 36 “special officers” empowered to arrest students and remove them from campus, which is likely to be for Trump’s mass deportation program
  • place its department of Middle East, South Asian and African studies into “academic receivership” under the oversight of a new senior vice provost
  • adopt a formal definition of antisemitism
  • review admission procedures to ensure those processes are “unbiased” (by the Trump definition of that word)
  • commit to “greater institutional neutrality” — most of which address demands from the Trump administration

It is not yet clear whether the university’s concessions will be enough to restore federal funding.
