China Halts LNG Imports from USA Due to DJT’s Tariffs

| 0

China stopped importing liquefied natural gas from the USA in response to tariffs imposed by Donald Trump.

In January, Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested using LNG to gain leverage in trade negotiations with China. That possibility has now been eliminated.

China is the world’s largest buyer of LNG and the USA is the largest seller.

Chinese LNG buyers that have long-term commitments with USA sellers are not taking delivery in China, redirecting their shipments to Europe instead. They are also not making new purchasing deals with the USA.

New purchasing deals by Chinese companies are with suppliers in the Asia-Pacific region, including Russia, or the Middle East. As an example, China Resources Gas International signed a 15 year deal to buy LNG from Australia’s Woodside Energy Group starting in 2027.

China has been reducing its need for LNG by increasing its own gas production and by getting more of its energy from other sources such as coal and renewables.
