Breastfeeding Mother Deported Without 1 Year Old Child with Health Issues

Cuban-born Heidy Sánchez, the wife of a USA citizen and breastfeeding mother of a 1 year old daughter with a seizure disorder, was detained when she attended a routine immigration check-in and quickly deported to Cuba, separating her from her daughter.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Florida refused to allow her lawyer Claudia Cañizares to file a challenge on Thursday. ICE said Sánchez was already gone. Cañizares does not believe them.

Cañizares intends to reopen Sánchez’s case so she can stay in the USA legally. ICE said she can do that while Sánchez is in Cuba.

Sánchez has no criminal record. She was detained for nine months and had an outstanding deportation order due to missing a hearing in 2019, but Cuba refused to accept her. In 2020 ICE released her with orders to regularly attend check-in appointments.
