Bipartisan Senate Bill Seeks to Reclaim Congressional Power Over Tariffs
Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) jointly introduced a bill to reclaim from Donald Trump normal Congressional authority over tariffs.
The bill would make the President notify Congress within 48 hours of imposing a tariff and would require explicit approval within 60 days by Congress for any new tariffs. Congress would also be able to end any tariff at any time.
It is highly unlikely that the bill will ever become law. It serves as a signal of bipartisan disquiet in the Senate about Trump’s escalating trade war.
