60 Minutes Finds 75% of Venezuelans Sent to El Salvador Prison Have No Criminal Record

| 0

Investigation by the weekly television show 60 Minutes found that of the 238 Venezuelan men Donald Trump sent to CECOT prison in El Salvador without due process, claiming they were terrorists or gang members, 179 (75%) have no criminal record in the USA or abroad.

The government claims the people it sent were the worst, yet persistently refuses to produce evidence to support its allegations, perhaps because it does not have evidence to show. So far it has admitted to sending Kilmar Abrego Garcia there by mistake, and rushed its insistence on not bringing him back all the way to the Supreme Court. Others have been identified with social media and personal histories that make it bizarre to accuse them of terrorism or gang affiliation.

It has also gone all the way to the Supreme Court to get to continue rounding up people to ship out to other countries using the Alien Enemies Act, as it did with these men. The Supreme Court ruled that it can do so, but must allow them a chance to file petitions of habeas corpus. This must be done individually wherever they are shipped as an interim step before expulsion, not in a class action and not where they are first detained and may have legal counsel nearby.
