USA Stock Markets Whipsaw and Finish Down

USA stock markets started down, surged on brief hope that Donald Trump would relent in his tariff war, then sank after Trump further escalated his tariff attack on China.

The markets closed for the day:

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average down 320.01 points (0.8%) to 37,645.59
  • S&P 500 down 79.48 points (1.6%) to 4,982.77
  • Nasdaq composite down 335.35 points (2.1%) to 15,267.91
  • Russell 2000 index of smaller companies down 49.43 points (2,7%) to 1,760.71

For the week:

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average down 669.27 points (1.7%)
  • S&P 500 down 91.31  points (1.8%)
  • Nasdaq composite down 319.87 points (2.1%)
  • Russell 2000 index of smaller companies down 66.32 points (3.6%)

For the year:

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average down 4,898.63 points (11.5%)
  • S&P 500 down 898.86 points (15.3%)
  • Nasdaq composite down 4,042.88 points (20.9%)
