UK Will Buy F35A Fighter Jets from USA to Restore Ability to Drop Nuclear Bombs

| 0

The UK will buy at least twelve new F35A Lightning stealth fighter jets, which can carry conventional or USA-made B61 nuclear bombs to restore nuclear capability to the Royal Air Force.

Since the UK retired its WE177 nuclear bombs in 1998, its large scale nuclear deterrent has been limited to nuclear warheads made in the UK and mounted on USA-made Trident missiles in UK Vanguard-class submarines. The new jets will become part of NATO’s airborne nuclear capability.

The F35 fighter jet series are products of Lockheed Martin. They use conventional runways.

Countries which use or are buying the F35A now include:

  • Australia
  • Belgium (awaiting delivery)
  • Denmark (awaiting delivery)
  • Germany
  • Israel
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Netherlands
  • Poland (awaiting delivery)
  • South Korea
  • United Kingdom (initiating purchase)
  • United States of America

The UK’s F35A jets will be based at RAF Marham in Norfolk.
