Top Treasury Official Leaving After Clash with Musk Allies

David Lebryk, the highest ranking nonpolitical career Treasury Department official, is leaving after attempting to stop the Elon Musk team from accessing sensitive payment systems.

The systems disburse $6 trillion each year for such purposes as Social Security, Medicare, tax refunds, contract payments (including to some of Musk’s competitors) and federal wages.

Last week Lebryk was Acting Treasury Secretary. He is highly regarded within the department. His departure date has not yet been announced.

On Monday the Senate confirmed Scott Bessent as Treasury secretary.
