TN Makes it a Felony for Any Public Official to Vote for Sanctuary

| 0

The Tennessee Legislature passed and sent to Gov. Bill Lee for signature a law making it a felony for any public official to vote in favor of any sanctuary policy.

Since 2018 it has been illegal for any locality in Tennessee to enact sanctuary policies, which are defined as prohibiting communication with federal officials to “verify or report immigration status of any alien” or grant undocumented immigrants the “right to lawful presence within the boundaries of this state.”

Lawmakers passed the measure despite their own legislature’s attorneys advice, which calls the law “constitutionally suspect.”

The ACLU plans to challenge the law in court.
