Supreme Court Allows DJT to Proceed with Dramatic Slashing of Workforce

In an unsigned order, the Supreme Court barred a lower court order which had temporarily prohibited Donald Trump from wholesale reorganization of the federal government and radical downsizing of its workforce.

A coalition led by the American Federation of Government Employees, which is the largest labor union for federal workers, sued to stop Trump’s plan on the grounds that only Congress can dismantle agencies it established. Federal District Court Judge Susan Illston in California agreed, noting that Trump needed Congressional approval for such extreme impact on spending that Congress appropriated.

The Supreme Court’s decision included some finely parsed reasoning that it is acceptable for Trump to order plans drawn up for what he wants to do, and that such planning is not the same as carrying out the plans.
