Romania Elects Centrist Pro-EU Nicu?or Dan as President

Romania elected centrist pro-EU Nicu?or Dan, the mayor of Budapest, to be its new President.

This was regarded as a surprise result after Dan came in a distant second to George Simion, a deliberate imitator of Donald Trump, in the first round of voting. Like Trump, Simion began to question whether the election had been stolen while people were still voting. Also like Simion, he claimed victory Sunday night on social media in spite of exit polls clearly against him. He claimed dead people were voting and elderly people were being coerced into voting against him through threats to evict them from hospitals. But Dan won by about 8%, too decisive to undermine, so eventually Simion conceded.

Dan was a mathematician before going into politics. He ran as an independent.
